Not all essential oils are created the same

Have you ever tried a product and it not give you the results you were expecting based on the advertisement? I know I have. Countless times. That is why I am skeptical about most of the latest fads. Essential Oils are the new “it” thing. Many people think that the oils they get from Walmart or Amazon are quality products. They purchase them, thinking they will solve some issue they have. However, not all essential oils are the same.

Many people think that if a product is on the market, it must be safe. Otherwise, the government would not allow it to be on the market. I thought this most of my life. In fact, I was stunned when I found out that the government only inspects a fraction of the items currently on the market today. I was stunned to learn for example that most cereal on the market today has trisodium phosphate in it. Trisodium phosphate, also known as TSP, is a caustic material that is used in cleaning products. In fact, TSP has a warning that you must wear gloves when using this product to prevent chemical burns. This is in many cereals people eat on a daily basis.

How many of you have read the back of your toothpaste? Does your toothpaste have trisodium phosphate as an ingredient? Does it have a warning about accidentally swallowing to seek medical care or contact poison control?

Even reading labels is not enough. Are you aware that if a company deems an ingredient is part of a propriety blend which makes their product unique, it does not need to disclose the ingredient on the label? I was stunned when I learned this. It doesn’t matter if the ingredient has a detrimental effect.

Are you aware that most women introduce over 300 toxins into their body before breakfast? From our toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, face soap, body wash, make up, hair styling products and more. Our skin is our largest organ. Anything we put on our skin gets introduced to our system, including what we launder our clothes in. It is mind blowing! The biggest culprit being fragrance. How many products to you use that lists fragrance as an ingredient? Think about it. What is in your air freshener? Or what you use to clean your home and clothes? What about fabric softener? How many people get head discomfort from things they smell?

It has been said that to know your essential oil you need to know the seed and the soil. The essential oil industry is not regulated. (I am not advocating that the government start relegating. That is a whole other topic for another time.) However, that does mean that an oil may be labeled as pure, therapeutic with having little or no pure essential oil. It may be synthetic, not a real oil. Made from chemicals with the same makeup as pure oil. Our bodies do not know how to use the chemicals so you will not see the benefit. If the source of the oil comes from a broker there are multiple issues to consider. Do you know how many distillations the material goes through? Just like using a tea bag multiple times, each successive distillation weakens the essential oil. Are there additives to make the scent more “pleasing”? Are they adding chemicals? It is no wonder some oils to not work how as we expect. Are the seeds that are planted genetically modified to produce a greater yield? Do they use chemicals on the plants? Are there chemicals in the soil? Do they control the distillation process? How do they test the product? Do they use any third-party testing, a company that is not related? Do they harvest on a timetable or wait until the plant is ready to harvest? So how well do you know your essential oil and the company you purchase from?  Please contact me if you want to learn more about essential oils.
